St. John's College High School

A group of seven St. John’s College High School juniors and seniors and their two chaperones volunteered with us recently. They spent the week elbow-deep in paint at a client’s home in Nesbit. The group made quick work of the first coat of paint on the home’s exterior, but were disappointed to learn that it required a second coat. With no less enthusiasm, the teens made their way around the home again and also did touch-ups and cleaning inside.

Brian McCarthy, science teacher and chaperone, said that this was his second service trip to Mississippi. “We love it here. It is so different than the other places that we go to serve. It is interesting to see how people live outside of the city,” he commented.

McCarthy also lauded the SHSM volunteer program and its staff. “Mr. Lee and Paul teach the kids life skills and how to make repairs hands-on. I admire their patience,” McCarthy chuckled.

St. John’s Christian Service Immersion Program seeks to bring students to a mature understanding of their personal responsibility to those most in need through experience and reflection. The program boasts that students provide 25,000 service hours each year.

St. John’s has made several trips to Mississippi during the past few years. And this one will not be the last. In fact, there are two more groups from the school scheduled to each spend a week with us in June.
