Showcasing the value of learning in a Catholic environment

Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs the entire week, which this year is January 26 to February 1. The theme this year is “Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

From Grandparent’s Day to Career and Community Day, Sacred Heart School in Southaven and Holy Family School in Holly Springs are joining Catholic Schools Week festivities, thanks to you. Every year since 1948, because of your generous gifts, both schools have been able to provide hundreds of students a solid education in a Catholic environment in Mississippi, the poorest state in the nation.

At Sacred Heart School, the week starts with events like Grandparent’s and Special Friends Day. Students from Pre-K to Eighth Grade impress grandparents and special friends with a series of musical performances. Holy Family School begins the week with School Choice Day, underscoring the breadth of opportunities Catholic schools make available to students to develop spiritually and academically.

Both schools offer Mass weekly throughout the school year. Mass begins Catholic Schools Week on Tuesday at Sacred Heart School.  At Holy Family School, Mass is the climax of the week, taking place on Friday, as part of Celebrate Your Faith Day.

Alumni return to both schools during Community and Career Day events, along with a variety of local business leaders, to emphasize the impact the schools’ graduates have in their communities and respective professions.

Mid-week the schools’ basketball teams put sportsmanship on display as they face each other in an annual contest pitting two proud traditions of champions against each other in a spirited contest.

Pastor’s Appreciation Day is always one of the highlights of the week for both schools, as students invite pastors from their churches to lunch at school. An ecumenical event, leaders from all faiths are welcome, underscoring our common goals of advancing knowledge while forming faith-based values.

These events and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. Thanks to you, Sacred Heart Southern Missions can support the efforts of each of these schools to provide a Catholic education to students in northern Mississippi who might not otherwise be able to experience it.
