A group of volunteers from Pennsylvania recently came to north

Mississippi for two weeks to help with SHSM home rehab projects through our Volunteer Program. Chaperones Dcn. Ed, Miriam , Gail and Fr. Jeff, along with seven incoming high school seniors from across the Diocese of Scranton, were on a mission trip coordinated through the Pontifical Mission Society to bring a message of hope, healing and peace to those in need.

Supported by their respective parishes and the diocese, this group raised more than $12,000 in order that they might come and work in the sweltering Mississippi summer heat. A good chunk of the funds covered personal expenditures on travels and such, but the group also made a generous donation to the SHSM Volunteer Program.

The volunteers divided into two teams and headed off in different directions to accomplish their mission. Making a southeastern trek, Fr. Jeff, Miriam, William, Derek, Sofia and Gabrielle went to Byhalia each day with SHSM’s Paul Smith to repair a bathroom and re-floor the main living area of a home.

Taking the southwesterly route, Dcn. Ed, Gail, Sean, Adrian and Alexis made their way with Lee Smith to complete flooring, cabinets and put other finishing touches on a home in Tunica.

The mission group worked six days straight at their respective jobsites, then spent a few days visiting the Missionaries of Charity sisters in Memphis. Coming back to Mississippi, they cooked dinner at the Garden Cafe in Holly Springs, which was a real treat for these young people. Gabby said it was one of the most rewarding parts of her trip. Gabby said she liked cooking and serving, but the interaction was her favorite. “I think they took comfort in us just being there.”

All of the volunteers expressed their satisfaction in being able to accomplish the work, but more so what the mission trip did for everyone involved. “It has been so life-changing and we have only been here for a few days,” Alexis exclaimed.

Derek mentioned a standout moment for him. He said even though they were at a site to help repair a woman’s home, the woman told him that she was going to start volunteering at a nursing home because his group had inspired her.

On this trip the volunteers were inspired and they inspired those around them. When they return home and share their story, some of those they tell will see the need and be moved to help others. The good they have done here will continue to spread.

This was an eye-opening experience for this group, Derek explained. “The world is so much bigger than you think it is... there are so many people who need help.”
