Sarah was feeling desperate that Tuesday. The chance for a really good job was 75 miles away and she had no money for gas. She had an interview at the new Toyota plant in Blue Springs on Wednesday. How would she get there?
Then she saw the new sign for Sacred Heart Southern Missions Social Services. Hoping against hope, Sarah jotted down the phone number and called for an appointment. The next day, Wednesday, was Sr. Linda’s one day in our new Tate County office.
When she arrived that next morning, all dressed for her interview at Toyota, Sarah explained she’d been out of work for eight months, skimping on food and borrowing to pay bills. She had a chance for a good job—if she could just get there.
Sr. Linda said we could give her some food, filled her tank and gave her vouchers for additional gas to get back and forth.
Sarah came back to the office late that afternoon, not for more help-- just wanting to say “Thank you all so much; the gas made it all possible.” Toyota wanted her to come back for orientation. By the end of the week, Sarah had got the job!
Sarah’s story could be repeated many times in Tate County where jobs are few.
