Above, judges listen to student presentations then tally scores for each reading fair project.

The Mississippi Reading Fair is an annual event that dates back 18 years. Developed by the Mississippi Department of Education, it provides students in grades K-12 an opportunity to share their favorite book through a storyboard display.

Once again, Holy Family School students participated in the even. The children read a fiction or nonfiction book and displayed the information on a Tri-Board, creating a presentation similar to science fair projects to describe their book. Just as science fair projects must present in-depth information about an experiment, these reading fair displays present literary works in a similar way. Title, author, publisher, main characters, setting, plot, conflict, resolution and the author’s purpose are included for fictional works. Nonfiction projects include a student prediction based on events and facts presented, structure of text, graphic organizers to capture the main idea or points, a brief summary of the book, and the author’s purpose. These projects promote comprehension, creativity, as well as and oral communication when students make their presentations to the judges.

There are four levels of competition: school, district, regional and state. Only first place winners in each division proceed to the next round of competition. The first place winners in each category from Holy Family School will move on to the Holly Springs District competition. From there, first place winners will move on to the regional competition in Oxford and then on to the state competition if they place first in Oxford.

For the last two years, Holy Family School has had several first place winners in the district fair who were able to compete in the regional fair. More than 1,200 students compete regionally each year. This is significant because these students represent the several thousands of students who compete at both the school and district levels.

Congratulations to this year’s first place winners at Holy Family School: Izearia, Victoria, Jamya, Te’Lei, Caleb, Alyssa, Aleeyah, Caitlyn, Madison, Markalin and Arnetia. Good luck on your next level of competition!
