Elizabeth's Legacy

Elizabeth was introduced to Sacred Heart Southern Missions through the Sacred Heart Auto League back in 1969 by her father. She became a member and thereafter contributed on a monthly basis for the next four decades.

As a teacher Elizabeth was drawn to the efforts of our two schools, Sacred Heart School in Southaven and Holy Family School in Holly Springs. The cold winters of her small Massachusetts town made her acutely aware of the clothing challenges for the poor and she would often send used clothing that we can make available through our Thrift Store in Hernando.

Elizabeth always longed to do even more for the various programs of Sacred Heart Southern Missions but she also had to be careful that her own financial needs were provided for. As someone who never married, it was both instinctive and practical to save for retirement.

When Elizabeth died a short time ago, at the age of 96, we learned that she had honored us by naming Sacred Heart Southern Missions as a beneficiary in her Will.

Largely because drawing up a Will involves an investment of time, usually requires the hiring of an attorney and forces us to face our own mortality many people die without one. Massachusetts, like all states, has laws that dictate how assets are distributed when someone dies without a Will. As you might imagine, those laws do not direct funds to charities. Fortunately Elizabeth made the effort to create an estate plan that specified how the assets she spent a lifetime acquiring were to be used.

Elizabeth spent her last years with the peace of mind that came from knowing that a portion of her estate would go to the charity that she had supported for more than 40 years and that her father had supported before that. She left behind a legacy of care and concern for the poorest among us.

We would ask you to prayerfully consider remembering Sacred Heart Southern Missions in your estate plans as well. These bequest gifts are a crucial means of support for our vital ministries.
