Transformation of a Lifetime

Sacred Heart Southern Missions’ Dehon Learning Center recently offered a job readiness and empowerment program entitled “Women N Transformation.” Sponsored by SHSM, Dress for Success Memphis and FedEx, the six-week course was designed to boost self-esteem and promote economic independence.

“I learned to always be professional and empower myself,” said Sherri.

By providing professional attire, career development tools and a network of support, the Women N Transformation program seeks to help women thrive in their professional and personal lives.

Poverty often affects women the most, and its effects on them and their families can be long lasting. Therefore, addressing women’s needs is central to improving the quality of life for not only that woman but also her family.

SHSM’s Housing Counselor Joyce Moore was the program’s coordinator. Group facilitator for the session was Sandra Burke, executive director, Dress For Success Memphis. Developed in conjunction with the Adult Continuing Education Program for residents of Dehon Village, Moore stated that Women N Transformation was another avenue to help give our clients and program attendees a hand up.

“With the life skills and information gained through this program, the women will have an even greater impact in their families and communities,” Joyce said. Attendees were given strategies to nurture their professional growth. Each of the six sessions was designed to make the ladies feel more stable in their career choices and encourage

development of professional skills. A variety of guest speakers brought even more ideas and opportunities to the group. A network of referral contacts and agencies established a safety net of support for the ladies beyond the program scope. Each of the participants seemed to embrace a new found confidence. Aline , who is pursuing the goal of becoming a motivational speaker, stated, “In six weeks, I got motivated to take a dream of mine off the back burner.”

Sheri, a Mary Kay independent beauty consultant, said, “In six weeks, I learned to always be professional and empower myself.” As a reward for their commitment, each participant was sized and given free business attire - just another way of encouraging the ladies on their professional journey.

What started out as a small class of four quickly grew to a sizable group of 13 women. Moore proudly stated that the measurable outcome for women searching for employment has been 100 percent. She said, “We are really pleased with the outcome of this course!”

By popular demand, the course will be brought back in August, after school returns to session.
