It’s Elementary, Dear Watson

Sacred Heart School held its annual Science and Engineering Fair on Thursday, January 21. Competition levels were 3rd grade, 4th – 6th grade, and 7th - 8th grade. Students competed in the following categories:

Science Fair• Behavioral and Social Science
• Botany
• Biochemistry
• Chemistry
• Earth, Space and Environmental
• Engineering, Computers and Math
• Medicine and Health
• Microbiology
• Physics
• Zoology

Close to 160 projects were in the competition. Judges for the fair came from Christian Brothers University, Northwest Community College, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Desoto County Museum, and Sacred Heart Southern Missions.

“I was so impressed with the oral presentations and the variety of projects by the children,” says Ed Savage, SHSM Planned Giving manager, who was one of the judges. “You could tell they really knew what they were talking about and had done a thorough investigation.

“For example, there was one project that the other judge and I had initially graded down when we saw it because we thought the concept was beyond what a child that age could do. But when we interviewed the child we found that she was very aware of the features of the project and understood the concepts. She whipped right through her presentation and confidently asked us if we had any questions.

We went back and changed our initial grade.” Students who won first through fourth place in the Science Fair will go on to compete at the District level in Oxford in March.
